Two-Sided Extrusion

Estimated reading: 3 minutes 3 views

In this Task

  • A two-sided extrusion will be created of each circle profile.

Associated Tasks

  • Explaining Form Building Edges.

Before you Start

  • Use your drawing which was saved in the previous Task or make use of the sample drawing for this Session. The previous Task/Tasks must be completed in order to continue with this Task.
  • The view is set to Isometric South East; Workplane is displayed and set to Plane by World.

Take Note

  • The Two-Sided Extrusion option creates an equidistant extrusion by dividing the total height of the extrusion by 2. Therefore, if a total extrusion height of 300 is required, 150 is input into the Height field.

This extrusion tool sweeps a 2D profile in a plane perpendicular to the workplane to create a 3D object.A 2D profile can be extruded bi-directionally to create an equidistant extrusion above and below the workplane.

In this task, the remaining 2D circles cannot be extruded upwards to create the holes as a portion of the cylinder sits below the Workplane, thus not allowing an extrusion to be pulled entirely through the cylinder.

By creating a 2-sided extrusion which exceeds the height of the arm, the extrusions can successfully be used as subtracting units for the cylinders.

Select the Simple Extrude tool from the menu options above, making sure the Layer remains set to Part 2 Model, then select the TwoSided option from the status bar or the local menu, shown below.

Selecting the 2-sided extrude option

Select the first of the circles, then drag the cursor upwards or downwards until the extrusion is greater than the height of the model, shown below. Remember, the exact height is not relevant.

In the example below, the extrusion is shown without Form Building Edges. This is a display feature which is controlled using Options > Display > Form Building Edges.

Repeat this for the remaining circle, creating 2 extrusions through the cylinders shown below.

The result is shown below. The color of the arm has been changed for illustrative clarity only.
