Inserting Part 2

Estimated reading: 4 minutes 5 views

In this Task

  • The 2D sketch geometry of Part 2 will be inserted into the editor from the Blocks palette.
  • The inserted Block will be exploded, then extruded.

Associated Tasks

  • Maintaining the correct layer structure will be reinforced.
  • Using the Design Director to switch off the layer for the model of Part 1.

Before you Start

  • Use your drawing which was saved in the previous Session or make use of the sample drawing for this Session.
  • The view is set to Isometric South East; Workplane is displayed and set to Plane by World.

Take Note

  • Remember to explode Blocks when they are returned to the graphics editor.

Inserting a Part from the Blocks palette

Make sure the view is set to Isometric South East. The Workplane is displayed and is set to Plane by World.

Pan the drawing sheet so that the model of Part 1 is towards the left of the editor, shown below.

Use the Design Director to activate as current the layer Part 2 Sketch, shown below.

Activating Part 2 Sketch as the current layer

Open the Blocks palette, then drag Part 2 Sketch into the editor, shown below.

Dragging Part_2_Sketch into the editor

Select the newly inserted part, then use Modify | Explode (CTRL-ALT-E) to return it to its constituent geometry. After the Block of this part is exploded, it will automatically be placed on the layer on which it was originally constructed, Part 2 Sketch, shown below.

Part_2_Sketch returned to its original layer after exploding

ISOLATING & hiding objects

Ribbon : Edit | Object Options | Isolate/Hide Objects
Default Menu : Edit | Isolate Objects
This display tool allows objects which are drawn as specific parts to be temporarily isolated or hidden from view. This is effective when producing a design composed of several composite parts or complex shapes. When selecting the Isolate Objects option, only the selected object or group of objects is displayed in the editor, with all remaining objects being temporarily hidden. The End Isolation tool restores the display of all entities in the drawing. When selecting the Hide Objects option, the selected object or group of objects is temporarily hidden in the editor, with all remaining objects displayed. The Isolate/Hide Objects tool functions for both 2D profiles and 3D parts, and single or multiple objects can be selected to be Isolated or Hidden. Objects drawn on multiple layers can also be selected, provided such layers are not locked in the Design Director. The objects which are isolated in the editor appear in the Part Tree in the Selection Info palette and changes to the design can be done in context. When isolated features are modified in the Part Tree, the associated parts are displayed in context in the editor until the modification is complete. WhenWhen the End Isolation tool is selected, all previously isolated (displayed) or hidden objects are restored to the editor, irrespective of the current view. The Isolate/Hide Objects tool functions independently from layer control methods used in the Design Director.Objects can be selected using the Isolate/Hide Objects function in any view or display mode.

Multiple parts within the editor can be displayed or concealed during the design process. In this task, Part 1 will be hidden to conceal the sketch and model.

Select Part 1, then select Edit | Hide Objects. This part is temporarily concealed until End Isolation is used.

Only the Sketch profile of Part 2 should be displayed in the editor.

Simple Extrude

Ribbon : Draw | Draw 3D | Simple Extrude
Default Menu : Draw | 3D Object | 3D Profile Based | Simple Extrude
Palette : 3D Model | 3D Object | Simple Extrude
This extrusion tool sweeps a 2D profile in a plane perpendicular to the workplane to create a 3D object.

Select the Simple Extrude tool from the menu options above, then set the layer to Part 2 Model.

Select the profile of the sketch, then TAB to the Height field and input 12. Press enter.

The result is shown below.
