Using the TRIM Tool

Before you Start

  • The Parallel tool was discussed in more detail in an earlier task.
  • Menu options for the Default menu and workspace, the Ribbon and Palettes are provided directly under the Command Name heading.

 

Trim

Ribbon : Modify | 2D Modifications | Object Trim
Default Menu : Modify | Trim
Palette : Modify | Modify | Object Trim
This tool deletes the segments of lines or arcs between intersecting boundaries.The intersecting boundary edges are referred to as cutting edges.

First use the Parallel tool to create an offset of 10 either side of the horizontal center line, shown below.

Next, select the Trim tool from the menu options above and select the right-hand circle, shown below. The circle is now selected as the cutting edge.

Select the top then the bottom horizontal lines to the left of the circle which forms the cutting edge, shown below.

Press Escape once to end the current selection. The result is shown below.

Next, select the top segment of line to the right of the circle. Hold down the SHIFT keyboard key and select the bottom segment of line, shown below.

Take Note

The ± symbol next to the cursor, below, indicates that another cutting edge is being selected.

In any order, select the segments of lines shown below left, then press ESCAPE to end the sequence. The result is shown below right.
