Revolve with Spiral

Estimated reading: 3 minutes 4 views

In this Task

  • A spiral will be created by revolving the circle (profile) about the path created by the line.

Before you Start

  • Use your drawing which was saved in the previous Session or make use of the sample drawing for this Session. The previous Task/Tasks must be completed in order to continue with this Task.
  • View is set to Isometric South East.
  • Workplane is displayed; Workplane is set to Plane by World.
  • Layers for Parts 1-3 are switched off; only the sketch geometry of Part 4 is shown in the editor.

Default Menu : Draw | 3D Object | 3D Profile Based | Revolve
Palette : 3D Model | Revolve
The Revolve tool revolves a profile about an axis to produce a 3D object.A 2D polyline can be used to create a suitable profile which can be revolved about an axis to produce a part. If the start and end point of the polylines are collinear, then the resulting part will be a closed, filled area. The degree of rotation of the part can be controlled by adjusting the revolved shape properties. This can be modified using the Properties sheet or the Selection Info palette. The Revolve tool can be used to produce a spiral by providing a length, angle of rotation, spiral pitch and number of coils.

In this task, a spiral length of 48 will be given, the number of coils will be 12 and the spiral pitch will be given as 4.

Turn the view to Isometric South East and display the Workplane. Only the sketch geometry of Part 4 should be visible in the graphics editor.

Select the Revolve tool from the menu options above, then right click in the graphics editor to set the following information in the Properties page.

In the Revolution Shape page, input the Spiral Pitch first, then the Number of Coils.

Press OK when finished.

Creating a spiral pitch and number of coils

Set the layer to Part 4 Model, then select the circle. Use the end vertices of the line to provide the revolution axis, shown below.

Providing the points of the revolution axis

The result is shown below.

Result of spiral

Use the Design Director to display all the parts in the editor, shown below.

Take Note

The Selection Info palette can be used to change the properties of the spiral. The original axis defined the length of a spiral with 12 coils and a pitch of 4 mm. In the example below, the spiral has been updated to 12 coils with a pitch of 8 mm. The axis is retained.
