2D sketch profiles are frequently used to create profiles for 3D objects.  The polyline tool is useful for this task.

A simple extrusion can be performed on a closed sketch profile to produce a solid object.

The positive or negative direction of the extrusion depends on the user coordinate system.

The Workplane by Facet tool applies a workplane to a selected facet (flat surface) of a 3D object.

The Foreground Wireframe option is used in a rendered viewport to show 2D objects, such as the sketch profile and dimensions.
