3D Subtract

Estimated reading: 3 minutes 6 views

In this Task

All the solid objects will be rotated then a switch will be created using 2D profiles, extrusions and the 3D Subtract tool.

Associated Tasks

Rotating 3D objects.

Creating a new extrusion.

Before you Start

View is set to Isometric South East.

Workplane is displayed.

Take Note

Due to the freehand drawing content in this task, the Video Animation activity may differ slightly.

3D Rotation

Turn the view to Isometric South East.

Select all the solid objects (CTRL A can be used to select all objects in the editor), then use the selector shell handles to rotate by 90º.  Use the Z rotator bar, then TAB to the Y rotation field and input 90º or hold down the SHIFT key until the correct rotation angle is found.

The result is shown below when viewed from an Isometric South East view.

Set the view to Front so that the flashlight is displayed longitudinally, shown below.  Please note :  the model has been rotated so orthographic views are now displayed in relation to its current position.

Use Workplane Origin and place the Workplane on the vertex shown below.

Concentric Circles

Ribbon : Draw | Draw 2D | Circle/Ellipse | Concentric
Default Menu : Draw | Circle | Concentric
Palette : Sketch | Circle/Ellipse | Concentric Circles
The Concentric Circle tool draws a series of circles at different radii from the same center point. The radii or diameters are input into the data fields of the Inspector Bar.

Turn the view to World Plan and draw 2 circle profiles in a similar position to that shown below.  Use the Casing layer to draw the circles.

In this example, the selector shell handles were used to stretch the outer circle.

Turn the view to Front, then use the Simple Extrude tool to extrude the outer circle upwards, similar to the illustration, below. The height is not critical, provided it exceeds the height of the overall part.

3D Subtract

Ribbon : Modify | 3D Modifications | 3D Boolean | 3D Subtract
Default Menu : Modify | Modify 3D Objects | 3D Boolean Operations | 3D Subtract
Palette : 3D Model | Boolean & Facet | 3D Subtract
This boolean function subtracts a secondary solid from an intersecting primary solid (subtrahend)

Use 3D Subtract to subtract the volume of the new extrusion from the primary solid. Remember to select the primary solid first, then the subtracting unit.
