Parallel Line

Estimated reading: 3 minutes 5 views

In this Task

  • New lines will be created using the Parallel tool.
  • Blended edges will be created using the Fillet 2D tool.
  • Line modification will be done using the Shrink/Extend tool.

Associated Tasks

  • Creating a new parallel line to create new intersections.

Take Note

  • Due to the freehand drawing of the main center lines, the top horizontal line may not intersect the verticals. If this is the case, the Line Length Modify | Line Length  tool can be used to lengthen the vertical lines upwards. Lengthening the lines, however, will not affect the next Task.
  • Menu options for the Default menu and workspace, the Ribbon and Palettes are provided directly under the Command Name heading.

Parallel Line

Ribbon : Draw | Draw 2D | Line | Parallel
Default Menu : Draw | Line | Parallel
Palette : Sketch | Line | Parallel
Creates a parallel line at a specified offset distance from an existing line. The distance is input into the Offset field of the Inspector Bar.The Offset data field can be locked when a fixed offset distance is required.

Using the Parallel tool from the menu options above, create offsets from the vertical and horizontal center line to the measurements shown below.

Take Note

Due to the freehand drawing of the main center lines, the top horizontal line may not intersect the verticals. If this is the case, the Line Length Modify | Line Length  tool can be used to lengthen the vertical lines upwards. Lengthening the lines will not affect the next Task.

Fillet 2D

Ribbon : Modify | 2D Modifications | Fillet2D
Default Menu : Modify | Fillet2D
Palette : Modify | Modify | Fillet2D
The Fillet tool creates an arc or radius between 2 lines, circles or arcs to a specific radius. When blending a polyline, the lines and arcs can remain as a single object, or reduced to a collection of lines and arcs.

Select the Fillet 2D tool from the menu options above and input a radius of 14 into the data fields. Create the radial blend by selecting the lines within the circle markers shown below left. The result is shown below right.

Shrink/Extend Line

Ribbon : Modify | 2D Modifications | Shrink/Extend Line
Default Menu : Modify | Shrink/Extend Line
Palette : Modify | Modify | Shrink/Extend Line
This modification tool shortens or lengthens a line to a boundary edge. The planar integrity of the modified line is maintained.

Select the Shrink/Extend Line tool from the menu options above, then select each vertical line in turn to shorten, shown below. Take care to select this line towards the bottom vertex, shown by the magnetic marker.

Shorten this line to the horizontal line, shown by the pointer below.

Repeat this with the corresponding line so that the result is similar to the illustration below.
