Drawing Layout

Estimated reading: 6 minutes 5 views

In this Task

  • Two views of the sketch and image will be created and inserted into the paper space layout.

Associated Tasks

  • Relocating the Reference Point of the Selection.
  • Using the Draw Order tool to control the precedence of objects.
  • Superimposing the floor plan onto the image.

Before you Start

  • The newly drawn floor plan layout will be moved to a common position on the image. Accuracy is not essential as this is a conceptual sketch, but a higher zoom magnification is recommended when moving the objects.

Take Note

  • The Arch_C layout was created in the House Template Metric from which this drawing was initiated.

Model Space, also referred to as the editor, is the area in which the sketch geometry of the drawing is produced at full scale. Annotations in the form of hatching and dimensions are also produced in the model space area.A View of the drawing is created which is then inserted into the Paper Space layout as a viewportPaper Space is the area where viewports of the drawing are assembled and the ‘virtual scale’ of the viewport is created here.Text notes and title blocks are also inserted into the Paper Space area. This is always set to the real-life, physical size of the paper onto which the drawing should be printed.Modifications performed on the sketch in the Model Space area are automatically updated in the relevant viewport in the Paper Space area.

Different drawing layouts can be produced showing the floor plan in the conceptual stage and a 3D rendition of the plan.

In this example, the drawing of the floor plan will be superimposed onto the image using similar reference points. This will allow the conceptual image to be positionally accurate when creating a drawing layout.

Select the floor plan, taking care to select all the walls, doors and windows. When the selection rectangle encloses all the objects, input D into the keyboard, then relocate the reference point to the vertex shown by the yellow dot shown circled below right.

Select the yellow reference point and move the selected objects to the position shown by the arrow above. There is no snap available, so accuracy is not required. The result is shown below.

Sketch superimposed on image

When viewed from an Isometric viewpoint, the image and the conceptual sketch will be similar to the illustration below.

Model Space, also referred to as the editor, is the area in which the sketch geometry of the 2D drawing is produced at full scale. Annotations in the form of hatching and dimensions are also produced in the model space area.A View of the drawing is created which is then inserted into the Paper Space layout as a viewport.

Turn the view to World Plan and make sure the drawing is viewed in Wireframe.

Create a view of this view, naming the view ‘Plan’ then turn the view to an isometric view and create another view, this time naming the view ‘Iso’

Insert View

Ribbon : Insert | Insert Objects | Viewport
Default Menu : View | Viewports | Viewport
Palette : Named View | Insert Viewport
Paper Space is the area where viewports of the drawing will be assembled and the ‘virtual scale’ of the viewport is created here.Text notes and title blocks are also inserted into the Paper Space area. This is always set to the real-life, physical size of the paper onto which the drawing is printed.Modifications performed on the sketch in the Model Space area are automatically updated in the relevant viewport in the Paper Space area.

Using any of the drawing layouts at the base of the workspace – Arch_C was used for this task – insert the newly created viewports onto the paper layout using View > Viewports > Viewport so that the result is similar to the illustration below.

Take Note

View creation and viewport insertion was discussed and demonstrated in 2D Session 1.

Views inserted into the paper space layout

Double click onto the Plan viewport and use the viewport layer control to display only the image. Double click onto the Iso view and display this viewport in rendered view. The result is similar to the illustration below.

Draw Order

Ribbon : Format | Distribute
Default : Tools | Draw Order

This section does not appear in the video animation for this task as it is for information purposes only.

The display of objects which are superimposed over each other can be controlled using the Draw Order tool. This allows objects to be moved backwards or forwards to favor whichever image is preferable.

In the case of the floor plan, this was superimposed over the image, but either of these views can be controlled by selecting the object and deciding whether to send the object to the back (less dominant) or to the front (more dominant)

An example of this is shown below.

In the example above left, the image has been brought to the front; in the example above right, the same image has been sent to the back, allowing the other lines to take precedence.

To do this, click the Model tab at the bottom left of the editor.

Select the image layer using Edit > Select by Layer > Layer 0, then using the menu options aboveselect the relevant forward/backward movement.

Layer Control in Viewports

By selecting a specific viewport, the layers can be controlled independently from other viewports. In the example below left, the viewport has been selected and the layer 0 has been deactivated.

Double click onto the left viewport and select the options shown below.
