Creating the Slot

Estimated reading: 4 minutes 7 views

In this Task

  • Additional sketch geometry will be added to the drawing.
  • Newly added geometry will then be modified to create the required result.

Associated Tasks

  • Line Length; Parallel Line; Meet 2 Lines; Trim

Before you Start

  • Layer Profile is activated as the current layer.

Take Note

  • Snap modes are not required for line modifications.

Creating the Slot

Line geometry which exists in a sketch can frequently be used to create construction geometry for new objects. In this task, a slot will be created, shown below, with all lines being constructed from existing geometry.

Line Length

Ribbon : Modify | 2D Modifications | Line Length
Default Menu : Modify | Line Length
Palette : Modify | Modify | Line Length
The Line Length tool allows a line to be lengthened or shortened in the same plane as which it was drawn. For this reason, it is a frequently used tool to temporarily extend lines to create construction geometry for new objects.Snap modes are not required when using the Line Length tool.

Select the Line Length tool from the menu options above, then lengthen the horizontal center line of the main circle towards the right, shown below.

Parallel Line

Ribbon : Draw | Draw 2D | Line | Parallel
Default Menu : Draw > Line > Parallel
Palette : Sketch | Line | Parallel

Use the Parallel tool from the menu options above to create horizontal offsets from the newly extended center line at a distance of 1.5 either side, then offset the right edge at a distance of 16, shown below.

Meet 2 Lines

Ribbon : Modify | 2D Modifications | Meet 2 Lines
Default Menu : Modify | Meet 2 Lines
Palette : Modify | Modify | Meet 2 Lines
The Meet 2 Lines tool creates ‘corners’ of intersecting or potentially intersecting lines. The planar geometry of the lines is not compromised when using the Meet 2 Lines tool.

The Meet 2 Lines tool will be used to create a 90° corner on the intersecting lines shown below. Both segments to the left of this line will be discarded.

Select the Meet 2 Lines tool from the menu options above.

In any order, select the first pair of lines in the approximate positions to those shown below.

Repeat this for the corresponding set of lines so that the result is similar to the illustration below.

A note about the ‘CHOICE’ option

The Choice selector option is activated as a default in the Program Setup > Preferences dialog box. When this option is activated, it presents a choice of options when there are multiple objects within the range of the selection aperture.

In the example below, the aperture range of the cursor finds 3 objects, 2 lines and an arc. The preferred object can be selected from the context menu.

Choice option finds 3 objects within the aperture range of the cursor

The Choice option can be deactivated by going to Program Setup > Preferences and deactivating the Choice option.

Trim

Ribbon : Modify | 2D Modifications | Object Trim
Default Menu : Modify | Trim
Palette : Modify | Modify | Object Trim
This tool is used to trim a line which is intersected by another line, creating a segment.A cutting edge is required first in order to trim a line.Use the Zoom In tool or the mouse wheel to increase the magnification in the area of the newly created lines.

Select the Trim tool from the menu options above.

At the prompt > Define the cutting edge, select the top line, then hold down the SHIFT key to select the bottom line of the set, shown below.

Release the SHIFT key, then trim the vertical segment between the 2 lines, shown below.

Press ESC, then select the vertical lines shown below as new cutting edges.

Release the SHIFT key, then select the horizontal segments to the right of the edge shown below.

Press ESC to finish the sequence. The result is shown below.
